English World Grammar Practice Book 4

English World Grammar Practice Book 4 is the fourth-level grammar practice companion to the English World primary course: the workbook in which each coursebook unit’s grammar is practised into permanence, at the level where the primary sentence comes of age.

The partnership is the design — grammar met in the coursebook’s stories returns here for its dedicated exercise sets, graded from guided to independent, so the child practises exactly what the lessons taught, in the week they taught it. Level 4 stretches the system: the past tenses deepen, comparisons sharpen, and the first complex sentences are built.

It is written for primary learners following English World, their teachers, and parents supervising homework — the practice half of one of the world’s standard primary English courses.

English World Grammar Practice Book 4 cover

Middle primary is where English stops being songs and labels and becomes a system the child operates. This practice book operates it: the tense contrasts of the fourth year — past simple against continuous, present perfect knocking at the door — comparatives and superlatives in earnest, must and have to, going to futures, and the question forms in their full variety, each given the English World treatment of modelled examples, guided sets, and freer production. Its classroom value is its reliability: the sets are long enough to matter and structured enough to be set as homework without a briefing, and its pages show a teacher in seconds who has understood and who has memorised. For the child, the book’s quiet achievement is confidence with evidence — page after page of correct sentences in their own hand, the primary learner’s first portfolio of proof. Between the play of the early levels and the thresholds of Level 5, Book 4 is the year’s honest work, and the course is designed so that this workbook is where that work happens.

About This Book

English World pairs every coursebook with its grammar practice companion, and Book 4 is the fourth year’s practice half: the workbook where the middle-primary grammar system — richer tenses, sharper comparisons, longer sentences — is exercised set by set until it belongs to the child.

What Learners Will Practise

Tenses in Contrast

Past simple and past continuous woven together in narrative, the present perfect introduced against its eternal neighbour, futures with going to and will — the fourth year’s tense work, always practised as choices between meanings, never as isolated paradigms.

Comparisons, Modals and Quantities

Comparative and superlative forms in their full patterns, must-have to-should in their duties, and the quantifier family measured out — the grammar of a child who can now argue, compare, and plan in English.

Questions and Longer Sentences

The question forms completed — subject questions, indirect wonderings in embryo — and the first joining clauses: because, when, if in its zero and first forms, the sentence beginning to carry two ideas at once.

Key Features

Course synchronisation is the feature: no set practises what the coursebook has not just taught. The graded release is the second — guided, then freer, then the child’s own — and the diagnostic clarity the third: a teacher reads this workbook like a report.

Who This Book Is For

It is for primary learners on English World Level 4, class teachers and English leads, tutors tracking a school course, and parents who want homework that visibly connects to lessons.

How to Use This Book

Run it in step with the coursebook, set by set, inside the unit’s week; insist the child reads each instruction aloud before writing — half of workbook errors are reading errors. Keep a light error tally by structure on the inside cover: by Level 5 it becomes the revision map. Teachers can lift single sets for starters and plenaries straight from the page.
