Smart Junior Student’s Book 1
Smart Junior Student’s Book 1 opens the Smart Junior course at its first level: the student’s book from which young learners begin their English, in classrooms where English arrives as a living subject rather than an examination. A first course book carries a responsibility out of proportion to its size, because it teaches two things at once — the language’s first words and patterns, and the learner’s first opinion of what English is. Get the second wrong and the first hardly matters: a child who decides at seven that English is a chore carries that verdict for years. This book is built against that danger. Its world is playful by design — characters to follow, songs and games as legitimate vehicles, short tasks with quick wins — while its syllabus underneath is entirely serious, sequencing the foundational vocabulary and structures that the later levels, also in this collection, will build on. Book 1 is where the course makes its promise: English is interesting, you can do this, and there is more where this came from.

Smart Junior Student’s Book 1 opens the Smart Junior English course: a playful, carefully sequenced first student’s book for young learners beginning English. Its readers are the children starting the course in their first school years, the teachers who will make English a favourite lesson or a chore, and the parents hearing the first English songs at home. In this collection it is the Smart Junior shelf’s first book: where the course, and the learner’s opinion of English, both begin. Both begin well here, by design and by delight. By delight, deliberately engineered. Engineered to feel like play. Pure play.

About This Book
Smart Junior Student’s Book 1 is the Student’s Book for Level 1 of the Smart Junior course — the pupil’s own book at the course’s opening level, the one the child carries, opens, and works in daily. A student’s book is the course made portable: syllabus, characters, activities, and progress all bound into the object the learner actually touches, while the teacher’s materials orbit around it.
The design problem of a first level is appetite. Everything in Book 1 must therefore earn the next lesson: units short enough to complete, variety built into the rhythm — a song here, a game there, a story that continues — and language loads measured so that success is the normal experience. Underneath the play, the engineering is orthodox and careful. Vocabulary arrives in small, themed, recyclable sets; structures appear inside exchanges children actually want to perform; listening and speaking lead, with reading and writing introduced at the pace small hands and growing eyes allow. Characters recur so that the book has a population, not just topics, and the child’s loyalty to them does the motivational heavy lifting no test ever could. Assessment hides inside celebration — revision games, sticker-worthy milestones, can-do moments a seven-year-old can report at home. By the final unit, the learner has a working starter English and, more valuable still, the settled expectation that English lessons are where the fun is filed. Levels 2, 3, and 4 of the course, all present in this collection, inherit that expectation; Book 1 is where it is minted.
What Learners Will Practise
First Words and Patterns
Children practise the foundational lexis and sentence frames of the course: greetings, classroom language, family, numbers, colours, and the simple exchanges built from them. Everything is met inside activity — said, sung, pointed at, and played — before it is ever written, because at this level the ear and the tongue are the senior organs.
Listening and Speaking First
The book practises English as a heard and spoken language before a read one: songs, chants, dialogues, and games in which every child speaks every lesson. Oral confidence is the level’s true syllabus; the child who will say it will later read and write it without fear.
Gentle First Literacy
Pupils practise the beginnings of English reading and writing at a humane pace: letter shapes, first words recognised whole, short supported writing. Literacy is introduced as another game the book knows, never as the moment the fun stops.
Key Features
The appetite-first design is the feature: play as the delivery system for a strictly sequenced syllabus. The recurring cast is the second — loyalty doing the work of motivation — and the course pathway the third, an opening level engineered to hand its learners, eager, to Book 2. In this collection it is the Smart Junior shelf’s first book.
Who This Book Is For
Young learners beginning English are its first audience, typically in the earliest primary years. Their teachers form its second readership, handed a first course that runs on goodwill it creates itself. Parents make its third, meeting the course at the kitchen table through songs their children insist on teaching them.
How to Use This Book
Protect the appetite: keep activities moving, end lessons on success, and let games finish properly rather than truncating them for one more exercise. Use the recurring characters as the class’s shared friends — reference them, wonder aloud what they will do next. At home, receive the songs graciously and ask for encores; the audience of parents is part of the method, whether the course says so or not.
