Smart Junior Student’s Book 2
Smart Junior Student’s Book 2 is the second Student’s Book of the Smart Junior course: a primary English coursebook built on the conviction that young learners are exactly as smart as the material assumes they are. Book 2 raises the assumption. Its readers have a first year of English in hand, and the volume spends it confidently: stories with real plots rather than labelled pictures, dialogues that wander pleasantly off-script, tasks that ask children to think in English about things worth thinking about — puzzles, choices, small mysteries with solutions hidden in the text. The Student’s Book remains the pupil’s own territory, colourful and busy in the friendliest way, but the friendliness is doing serious work: every game is a structure in disguise, every song a pronunciation lesson, every story a reading test the child passes for pleasure before anyone thinks to grade it. Smart, in this course, is a curriculum decision.

Smart Junior Student’s Book 2 is the second Student’s Book of the Smart Junior course: stories, dialogues, and thinking tasks for young learners, in the pupil’s own coursebook at Book 2 level. Its readers are the children in their second year of the course, the teachers who prefer energy to silence, and the parents whose child now corrects the family’s English pronunciation, mercilessly and usually correctly. In this collection it is the Smart Junior shelf’s second book: where the course’s bet on children’s intelligence pays its first dividends, in fluent, cheerful, unmistakable English. Cheerful dividends, paid weekly. In English. Mostly.

About This Book
Smart Junior Student’s Book 2 is the second Student’s Book of the Smart Junior course — the pupil’s coursebook for the course’s second level. It is a coursebook in the strict sense: the year’s English presented and practised in the sequence the course prescribes, inside one volume the pupil owns, carries, and works through from first unit to last.
The Smart Junior philosophy is visible on every page of this volume: children learn a language fastest when the language is carrying something interesting, so the book makes sure it always is. Stories are the engine — narrative gives vocabulary a reason to be remembered and grammar a place to live — and around the stories the volume builds its practice: comprehension that requires inference rather than spotting, speaking tasks with genuine information gaps where a partner actually needs to listen, and writing that begins, in Book 2, to belong to the child rather than to the answer key. The ‘smart’ of the course title is a working principle, not a compliment: tasks are calibrated a notch above comfortable, trusting that pupils rise to material that respects them, and the support is engineered to make the rising safe — rehearsal before performance, models before independence, choral cover for anyone not yet ready to solo. Teachers who know the course value its momentum: lessons move, children talk, the book fills up with evidence. Book 2 is where Smart Junior stops being an introduction and becomes an education.
What Learners Will Practise
Reading for the Plot
Children practise story reading with real comprehension stakes: predicting from pictures and titles, sequencing events, and answering questions whose answers must be inferred rather than found. The pleasure of finding out what happens is conscripted as the engine of reading stamina.
Talking With a Purpose
The book practises communication with outcomes: pair tasks where information must genuinely cross the gap, role plays with choices inside them, and class surveys whose results get reported. Speaking is rehearsed chorally, then risked socially, which is the order confidence prefers.
Writing That Belongs to Them
Pupils practise early composition: sentences framed and then freed, descriptions of people and places they actually know, and story endings of their own invention. The course treats the child’s ideas as the curriculum’s raw material, and the writing improves accordingly.
Key Features
The story engine is the feature: narrative carrying the language load, so practice never feels like practice. The calibrated challenge is the second — tasks pitched at respect, not at safety — and the Student’s Book format the third, the pupil’s own lively volume for the year. In this collection it is the Smart Junior shelf’s second book.
Who This Book Is For
Children in the Smart Junior course’s second year are its first audience, typically in the early primary years. Teachers form its second readership, handed a course that generates classroom energy rather than consuming it. Parents make its third, entertained at home by English that arrives as stories retold, songs performed, and opinions delivered in a second language.
How to Use This Book
Let the stories lead: preview, predict, read, react — in that rhythm — and resist pre-teaching vocabulary the story itself will teach better. Keep pair work noisy and timed; the buzz is the sound of the method working. At home, ask what happened in today’s story, and accept the answer in whichever language it arrives; the English version will follow within the week, unbidden.
