Deutsch als Zweitsprache Alphabetisierung für Jugendliche und junge Erwachsene
Deutsch als Zweitsprache Alphabetisierung für Jugendliche und junge Erwachsene is a literacy course for young German learners: Alphabetisierung — learning to read and write in the Latin alphabet and in German at the same time — designed specifically for Jugendliche und junge Erwachsene, teenagers and young adults.
Some young people arrive in German-speaking countries with interrupted schooling, or literate in another script — Arabic, Cyrillic, Tifinagh — but new to Latin letters. They do not need a children’s primer and they must not be given one: they need literacy teaching that respects their age while starting from the letter.
It is made for young learners (roughly 14–27) in DaZ and integration programmes, their teachers, and the volunteers who support them.

Alphabetisierung is the foundation course beneath A1: before grammar can begin, the script itself must be learned — letter shapes upper and lower case, letter sounds and the German sound system, syllable building, and the first handwriting-to-reading loop. This course builds that foundation with the dignity its learners are owed: the materials are designed for Jugendliche und junge Erwachsene, so the pictures, topics and tasks belong to young adult life — school, work, phones, friends, the city — never to the kindergarten. Methodically it moves the proven literacy way: from sounds to letters, letters to syllables, syllables to words, words to the first real sentences — with constant oral German alongside, so learners are speaking the language they are learning to read. Everyday literacy is the goal throughout: signs, forms, timetables, messages and the written artefacts of German daily life appear from early on, because these learners need literacy for survival paperwork as much as for school. Teachers of Alphabetisierungskurse get a structured, age-appropriate path; the learners get the key that unlocks every course after this one — and the particular pride of writing their own name, address and story in a new script.

About This Book
This is a German literacy (Alphabetisierung) course for teenagers and young adults learning German as a second language: Latin-script letters and sounds, syllable and word building, first reading and handwriting, and everyday literacy — age-appropriately designed.
What Learners Will Practise
Letters and Sounds
The Latin alphabet in German — shapes, names and the sound values that make decoding possible, including the German special characters ä, ö, ü and ß.
From Syllables to Sentences
Syllable building, first words, and the climb to real sentences — reading and handwriting growing together.
Everyday Literacy
Signs, forms, timetables and messages — the written world of German daily life, readable from the first months.
Key Features
The age-appropriate design is the feature — literacy for young adults, never infantilised. The script-to-speech method is the second: oral German grows alongside the written code. The survival-literacy content is the third: real documents, real tasks, real independence.
Who This Book Is For
It is for young DaZ learners (about 14–27) with interrupted schooling or a non-Latin first script, teachers of Alphabetisierung and integration courses, and volunteer literacy supporters.
How to Use This Book
Move slowly and celebrate visibly — literacy progress is measured in letters that stay learned. Practise handwriting daily in short sessions; the hand teaches the eye. Surround the course with environmental print — labels, signs, real forms — so the classroom’s letters keep appearing in the wild.
