Colloquial German 2 The Next Step in Language Learning Book
Colloquial German 2 is the second-stage course in the Colloquial series — ‘the next step in language learning’, as its subtitle honestly puts it — taking learners who have the basics into the fuller, faster, more idiomatic German of real life.
Where the first course teaches survival and structure, this one teaches range: longer dialogues on more adult themes, richer vocabulary, the grammar of nuance — reported speech, hypothesis, formality and informality — and the listening-and-reading stamina that intermediate German demands. The Colloquial method stays the same: realistic dialogues at the centre, grammar drawn out of them, exercises to fix it.
It is written for learners between the levels — too advanced for beginner books, not yet ready for native materials — self-teachers continuing from a first course, students consolidating toward B1 and B2, and anyone whose German works in the classroom but falters in the wild.

Second courses are the rarest good books in language publishing, because the intermediate stage is where learners are most often abandoned — beginner material exhausted, native material still out of reach. Colloquial German 2 is built precisely for that gap. Its dialogues are longer and more natural, its topics turn adult (work, media, relationships, opinions, plans), and its grammar agenda is the true intermediate one: the subjunctive in its working forms, passive constructions, extended word order, connectors that build arguments, and the register choices — du and Sie, colloquial and formal — that mark a speaker as competent. Exercises in the series’ style (comprehension, manipulation, translation, free production) keep every unit practical. For the self-teacher, it is the volume that converts a completed beginner course into a continuing education.

About This Book
The Colloquial series has carried self-teachers through the world’s languages for decades on a dialogue-first method, and its German second volume addresses the hardest transition in learning: from beginner competence to intermediate independence. It assumes a foundation and builds height on it — more language, faster, in more registers, about more of life.
What Learners Will Study
Dialogues of Adult Life
Extended, natural conversations on work and careers, travel in depth, media and technology, health, relationships, opinions and debate — the talk of grown-up life, at growing speed and idiom, each dialogue the centre of its unit’s grammar and exercises.
The Grammar of Nuance
Konjunktiv II for courtesy and hypothesis, reported speech, the passive in present and past, infinitive clauses, extended adjective constructions, and the connectors of argument — the structures that let a speaker shade meaning instead of merely stating it.
Register and Real Usage
When German is formal, when it is relaxed, and how the same message changes between them: du and Sie in practice, colloquial particles and fillers, letter and email conventions — the social grammar that examinations and real life both reward.
Key Features
Continuity is the feature: the same trusted method as the first course, pitched exactly one level higher, so returning learners lose nothing in the transition. The dialogue-centred design is the second — grammar is always met inside speech before it is analysed on the page.
Who This Book Is For
It is for learners who have completed a beginner German course (Colloquial German 1 or any equivalent), students moving from A2 toward B1/B2, expatriates and professionals whose working German needs deepening, and teachers seeking an intermediate course with genuine dialogue material.
How to Use This Book
Work unit by unit: read and re-read the dialogue until it is familiar, study the grammar it demonstrates, then do every exercise in writing. Speak the dialogues aloud — ideally with a partner, exchanging roles — and keep a notebook for the idioms and particles, the vocabulary of naturalness. Review earlier units monthly; intermediate German consolidates by revisiting, not by rushing forward.
