Reading Sketch Starter Student’s Book 1
Reading Sketch Starter Student’s Book 1 is the first book of the Reading Sketch Starter series, a graded reading course for young learners of English. It is written for children who are just beginning to read in English — pupils who know the alphabet and some simple words and are ready for their first short passages.
Every unit centres on a very short illustrated text. Children look at the pictures, read the passage with support, learn its key words, and answer simple questions about what they have read. Sentences are kept short, the same patterns return often, and the topics come from a child’s everyday world, so early reading feels achievable rather than daunting.
The book is used at the start of primary English programmes and in early reading classes, and it works equally well for a parent reading with a child at home.

Reading Sketch Starter Student’s Book 1 opens the Reading Sketch Starter series, the entry stage of a graded reading programme for young English learners. Its passages are the shortest in the series and its questions the simplest, because the book’s job is to turn children who can sound out words into children who read for meaning. Illustration does much of the supporting work: pictures explain the situation of each text before a word is read, and the key vocabulary is small, concrete, and repeated. Teachers use it as a first reading book in primary classes; it is also a sensible starting point for children beginning English reading outside school.

About This Book
Reading Sketch is a graded reading series for young learners, and its Starter stage is where the youngest readers begin. Student’s Book 1 is the first of the three Starter books: no reading experience is assumed beyond letter knowledge and a small spoken vocabulary, and every part of the book — text length, sentence patterns, questions — is scaled to a genuine beginner.
What Young Readers Practise
First Reading Passages
The texts are very short stories and simple descriptions, each readable in a few minutes. Reading a whole passage successfully, even a brief one, is an important experience for a beginner, and the book is arranged so that children have that experience in every unit.
Key Vocabulary
A small set of words is introduced with each passage and practised immediately in the text and questions. The words are concrete and useful — family, school, animals, food, daily actions — and they recur in later units so that they are remembered.
Simple Comprehension Questions
Questions after each passage ask children to find information in what they have just read: who, where, and what happened. Answering them teaches beginners that reading is for meaning, and gives teachers an easy check of understanding.
Key Features
The book’s chief feature is its grading: nothing in it runs ahead of a beginner. Large, clear illustration supports every text, repetition is built into the sentence patterns, and the gentle pace across units lets confidence grow steadily. It pairs naturally with a phonics or alphabet course running at the same time.
Who This Book Is For
It is intended for young primary pupils beginning English reading — typically the early school years — and for teachers of beginner classes and parents starting guided reading at home. Children who finish it are ready for Reading Sketch Starter Book 2.
How to Use This Book
Start with the pictures: talk about what the child can see before reading a word. Read the passage aloud together, then let the child read it again, helping only with words that block meaning. Finish with the questions, returning to the text to find each answer. Short, frequent sessions work better than long ones at this stage.

The next step in the same series is Reading Sketch Starter Student’s Book 2, with slightly longer passages and fuller answers. A companion reading series at a similar stage is Reading Train, starting with Reading Train Student’s Book 1.
