Interchange Workbook 1
Interchange Workbook 1 is the practice workbook for Level 1 of Interchange, the English course by Jack C. Richards published by Cambridge University Press. It works alongside the Interchange 1 Student’s Book, following the same units in the same order so that each class lesson is followed by written practice on the same language.
The exercises practise the grammar, vocabulary, and everyday functions of the level: forming and answering questions, talking about daily routines, family, work, past experiences, and plans, with short reading and writing tasks in every unit. Level 1 is for learners who know a little English and are building the foundations of confident everyday communication.
Teachers generally assign workbook units as homework after the matching Student’s Book unit; learners studying independently can use it to revise each unit in a structured way before moving on.

Interchange Workbook 1 belongs to the first level of the Interchange course (Cambridge University Press) by Jack C. Richards, a series for adult and young adult learners that runs from an Intro level to Level 3. The workbook’s role in the course is practice: while the Student’s Book presents new language through dialogues, listening, and speaking activities, the workbook gives learners written exercises on the same grammar and vocabulary, arranged unit by unit to match. This close pairing is why the book is a standard homework companion for Interchange classes and a useful revision book for learners reviewing Level 1 on their own.

About This Book
Interchange is a four-level English course written by Jack C. Richards and published by Cambridge University Press, used by adult and young adult learners in language schools worldwide. Level 1 is where the course proper begins: learners who have the basics, or who have completed the Intro level, build the grammar and vocabulary needed for everyday communication. The Workbook is the practice partner of the Level 1 Student’s Book.
What Learners Practise
Core Grammar
The workbook rehearses the central grammar of the level — the present, past, and future forms learners need first, question formation, and common sentence patterns — through exercises that place each structure in an everyday situation rather than leaving it as an abstract rule.
Everyday Vocabulary
Each unit’s topic vocabulary — daily routines, family, jobs, free time, food, travel, and similar themes — is practised through word groups, short texts, and sentence work, helping learners recognise the words in the Student’s Book and begin using them actively.
Reading and Writing
Short passages with comprehension questions and brief guided writing tasks appear across the workbook, giving learners regular practice in reading for meaning and writing simple connected texts.
Key Features
Everything in the workbook is keyed to the Student’s Book by unit, so progress is easy to organise for a whole class or for one learner. Exercises are short and varied, written for adults and young adults, and suitable both as set homework and as self-study revision.
Who This Workbook Is For
It is for learners studying Interchange Level 1 in language institutes, colleges, and private tuition, and for teachers who need homework that matches their course book exactly. Self-study learners with the Student’s Book can also work through it unit by unit.
How to Use This Workbook
Complete each workbook unit soon after the matching Student’s Book unit has been studied. Keep a note of exercises that cause difficulty — they usually point to a grammar point worth re-reading in the main book — and repeat that unit’s exercises after a few days if needed.
Related Books
Learners continuing the course move on to Interchange Workbook 2 at Level 2 and then Interchange Workbook 3, the practice book for the final level.
