Practising German Grammar Book
Practising German Grammar is the practice-first grammar workbook: a book built on the conviction that German grammar is learned by the hand — in activities, drills, puzzles, and production — and that explanation should arrive in the exact amount a learner needs to begin practising, not a page more.
Its units take the grammar topic by topic across the levels, each opening with the pattern made plain and then multiplying encounters with it: structured exercises, communicative tasks, and the occasional game, because a form practised with a smile is a form retained. An answer key makes the whole programme self-teaching.
It is written for learners of German from elementary to advanced who know that their coursebook’s six exercises per topic were never going to be enough — and for teachers perpetually photocopying supplementary practice that this book simply is.

Grammar workbooks divide into drill books and activity books; the durable ones are both. This one’s signature is range of practice: each structure is met first in controlled form, then stretched — into sentence-making, error-hunting, translation both ways, and small productions of the learner’s own — so the pattern is learned as a tool, not a recitation. The grading runs from the elementary core to the advanced refinements, which gives the book its long shelf life: bought for one course, kept for the next two, its later units waiting with the subjunctive and the passive when the learner arrives. Tutors set it as the practice backbone of private lessons; classes use it as the homework that needs no marking meeting; self-teachers work it cover to cover as a second, silent course — the one that makes the first course’s grammar usable.

About This Book
The title is a curriculum: practising, not reading about. This workbook exists because every teacher knows the arithmetic of grammar — one explanation, fifty practices — and so few books supply the fifty. Here they are, topic by topic, in the most varied forms the workbook tradition has developed.
What Learners Will Practise
The Core Structures in Depth
Cases and articles, adjective endings, the verb system entire, word order in all its clauses, prepositions, comparison, passive and subjunctive — each taken in a full unit of graded activities that begin controlled and end in the learner’s own sentences.
Accuracy Through Variety
The same pattern met as a gap-fill, a transformation, an error to hunt, a sentence to build, a mini-text to complete — variety is not decoration here; each new format forces a new retrieval, and retrieval is what memory keeps.
A Key That Closes the Loop
Full answers make every session self-scoring, which turns the book into a private tutor of unlimited patience: attempt, check, understand the miss, and the next unit starts from firmer ground.
Key Features
Depth per topic is the feature — practice in the dozens of encounters a structure needs — and variety of format the second, which keeps hundreds of exercises from ever feeling like hundreds. The level span is the third: one workbook accompanies the learner from the first cases to the last subjunctives.
Who This Book Is For
It is for learners of German from A1 to C1 who learn by doing, students whose coursebook practice runs out, candidates drilling for examinations, and teachers building homework and class activity banks. It pairs with any grammar reference — it is the practice the reference’s readers go looking for.
How to Use This Book
Work topic by topic in step with your course or your reference grammar: explanation there, practice here, answers checked immediately and errors analysed, not merely corrected. Redo a unit’s final, freest exercises after a month — production repeated at distance is the surest sign, and maker, of mastery. Teachers can set units whole or mine them singly; the key makes both painless.
